The Group
Alan (Curly) Davies - Guitar/vocals
Guitar/vocals, songwriter and, along with Rob (Floss) Davies, founder member of the band back in the days when The Subterraneans were just a duo. Musical influences include the guitarists Davey Graham, Bert Jansch, John Renbourne and the Jazz greats like Wes Montgomery, Charlie Byrd and John McGlaughlin. Also included in this list of luminaries is the blues of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. Other equally distinguished influences are Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Bob Marley.
Rob has been in and out of bands for many years before joining up with Alan in 1995 to form a duo called, The Second Phase, later to become The Subterraneans. As the band grew so did Rob's collection of basses, culminating in the aquisition of an old stand up bass in a sorry condition. After much sweat, and the addition of an electric pick-up, the bass is now an integral part of the unique Subterraneans sound. Rob's other duty is playing bass for a fine R n B band, The Exiles (formerly The Jets). Rob's influences include Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa and Chuck E Weiss.
Steve has played in several Chicago style R n B bands over the years, the most recent being the now defunct, Room to Move. At a loose end, and still wanting to get out there and do his thing, Steve joined The Subterraneans after an impromptu jam session. Steve's influences include the great blues harmonica players, Sonny Boy Williamson, Junior Wells and Sonny Terry.
Karl Harvey - Drums and percussion
As well as pounding skins for The Subterraneans, Karl's other duties include being drummer for the long standing rock band, Cripple Creek, and R n B band The Exiles (formerly The Jets). The main influences of Karl's superb drumming style is Frank Zappa's band and Bob Dylan's former band, The Band, as well as drummers from the Jazz/Funk genre.
Julian (Nule) Nicholas - Lead guitar
Julian has played guitar since a very young age, and it shows in the touches he brings to the songs of The Subterraneans. He has also performed and recorded with popular South Wales bands, Cripple Creek and The Exiles (formerly The Jets), and is currently learning the ins and outs of home recording. His influences include the blues greats like Buddy Guy and Albert King, together with slide guitar maestro, Ry Cooder.
